The garden only existed between midnight and three in the morning.

Luca discovered this by accident on the night his insomnia graduated from nuisance to companion. Unable to sleep, he had wandered to his kitchen window and looked out at the patch of cracked concrete behind his apartment building — the patch he used for storing his bicycle and avoiding his neighbors — and found, in its place, a garden.

Not a small garden. Not a window box of herbs or a few optimistic tulips pushing through urban grit. A garden the size of a city block, dense with trees whose canopies vanished into darkness above, threaded with gravel paths that wound between beds of flowers he could not name.

He put on his shoes and went outside.

The Rules

The garden taught him its rules slowly, the way a river teaches stone.

First: it was always night inside the garden, regardless of the season. The sky above was moonless and cloudless, filled with stars in constellations that matched no chart.

Second: time inside the garden passed differently. He could spend what felt like hours walking its paths and return to find only minutes had elapsed. Once, he read an entire novel on a bench beneath a willow and came back to discover his tea was still warm.

Third: the garden grew from memory. Not his memory — other people's. The flowers were scenes. The trees were years. If he pressed his palm to the bark of an oak, he would feel a summer afternoon that belonged to someone he had never met: the heat of it, the smell of cut grass, the sound of a screen door banging shut.

The Gardener

He met her on his seventh visit. She was kneeling beside a bed of white roses, her hands dark with soil, a pair of ancient secateurs resting across her knee. She looked up as though she had been expecting him.

"You're the one from 4B," she said. It was not a question.

"How long have you been tending this?"

"I don't tend it. I listen to it." She stood, brushed earth from her knees. "The garden grows what it needs to grow. I just make sure it has room."

"Room for what?"

She gestured at the vast, impossible space around them. "For everything people are afraid to remember during the day."

Luca looked at the roses. Each bloom, he now saw, contained a tiny scene — like a snow globe, but warm and alive. In one, a child was learning to ride a bicycle. In another, an old man sat at a piano, playing a song that Luca could almost hear.

"What happens at three?" he asked.

"It goes back to being concrete." She picked up her secateurs. "But the memories stay planted. They just wait for the next night."

He visited the garden every night for a year. He never told anyone. Some doors, he understood, stay open only if you don't point at them.
